I have been a supernumerary member of Opus Dei for 23 years. No one in my family really cared what I did with my spiritual life until now. Suddenly, since the Da Vinci Code came out and has been made into a movie, everyone I know wants to know why I joined a "cult where people whip themselves". How can people be so easily duped by the media? I am the same person I always was. A teacher working in a public school who has six children and has tried to put God into the ordinary circumstances of my day. Shortly after I joined Opus Dei, I nearly died giving birth to my 7th child. I hemorrhaged, got a massive transfusion, and yet the internal bleeding continued. A priest of Opus Dei stayed with my husband throughout the ordeal. People in Opus Dei around the country prayed for me. Visitors came to see me who were members of Opus Dei and heard of my condition to bring me support, prayers, and love. These strangers were sisters in the Work who, like the early Christians, loved their neighbor even when they didn't know me at all. This is the Beauty of Opus Dei: love and friendship in the middle of the world.
